Crystal Glazes? Yes, Please!

So we just discovered a new type of glaze (paint) for your pottery and we are in love with it! They’re called Crystal Glazes, and we think you’re gonna be just as crazy about them as we are. They paint onto your bare pottery just like regular paints. But then in the kiln, the little crystals in the paint POP into bright and fun bursts of color!

A few of the new crystal glazes at Arts & Glass showing bursts of colors.

We’ve tested out a few colors so far, and will be piloting these exciting new glazes at our Crystal Glaze Gnome workshop on Thursday, October 22. You can sign up for the event here. We’ll then be making the glazes available to walk-in’s after that based on availability. Once a glaze sells out, it might gone for good, so stop in to use them while they’re in stock!

Before our gnome was fired (baked) in our kiln (oven) and after firing!

You may be wondering if you can use them for dinnerware (plates, bowls, mugs). They are all non-toxic and food-safe, but due to some of the surface characteristics, if food does get into tiny crevices it can be difficult to clean. Therefor they are not recommended for surfaces that will touch food, but best used for home decor pieces. Vases and planters are a-ok though!

When School’s Closed, We’re Open!

Arts & Glass is open 10-8 on Monday, October 12, 2020! Come join us to paint some seasonal pottery pieces or fuse a beautiful glass work. No reservations are necessary, we have plenty of safely-distanced tables for you to create comfortably at.

Check out our selection of fall and Halloween pieces, like our ceramic pumpkins in all different sizes and shapes. Ask about our specialty rustic glazes that yield marvelous multi-tonal looks and different finishes!

If you’ve never gotten a chance before, give glass fusing a whirl. Instead of painting your design on, you assemble small pieces of colored glass to create your design, almost like a mosaic. We’ll then fuse your artwork into a solid piece to permanently bond the elements together and soften all sharp edges. We finish off your work to your choosing: with hanging hooks, flat, slumped into a bowl, mounted in a lantern, attached to a standing frame–there are lots of options!

If you’re looking for a fun activity to do at home, we’ve also got that covered. Any pottery piece can be turned into a Pottery To Go Kit–just pick out your piece and paints and we’ll pack it all up for you to work on at home. When you’re done painting, return the pottery for us to glaze and fire; we’ll have it ready for you to take home one week later. We’ve also made a few grab-and-go style kits like our Kids Halloween Kit that features your choice of a few seasonal favorites paired with a ton of Halloween goodies. Even better, it comes back in a reusable jack-o-lantern tote! You can purchase them in the studio or order ahead online for easy in-studio pick-up.
